About Sergey Parajanov

Film director and artist from the Soviet Union who made significant contributions to Ukrainian, Armenian and Georgian cinema and art.

He invented his own cinematic style, which was totally out of step with the guiding principles of socialist realism (the only sanctioned art style in the USSR). This, combined with his controversial lifestyle and behaviour, led Soviet authorities to repeatedly persecute and imprison him, and suppress his films.

Sergei Parajanov created a series of graphic works in the collage and assemblage technique. Many of them were exhibited. Also survived by Sergei Parajanov drawings, including so-called "mark from the zone", made with a ballpoint pen on the labels of matchboxes.

Parajanov had many admirers of his art but his vision did not attract many followers.

"Whoever tries to imitate me is lost", he reportedly said.
